Northern Premiers Unite on Shared Priorities

HAINES JUNCTION, YT — Leaders of all three Canadian territories met in Haines Junction, Yukon, at the annual Northern Premiers’ Forum, pledging continued collaboration to enhance prosperity, infrastructure, and community well-being across the North.

The forum brought together Yukon Premier Ranj Pillai, Northwest Territories Premier R.J. Simpson, and Nunavut Premier P.J. Akeeagok, who engaged with local and Indigenous leaders to discuss shared priorities, including economic development, health and social services, Arctic security, and fiscal capacity.

In their communique, the premiers highlighted the importance of federal recognition of the unique needs of Northern residents and emphasized collaborative work with Indigenous leadership on issues that affect daily life in remote communities.

“Collaboration that reflects the voices and experiences of Northerners will strengthen the resilience of our communities,” the communiqué stated, underscoring the need for sustainable solutions tailored to the region’s landscape and population.

The territories face distinct challenges, including high costs for infrastructure development, rising living costs, and a need for tailored health and social services. The leaders stated that closer federal engagement is essential to address these challenges effectively.

The meeting also highlighted the North’s strategic importance within Canada and placed renewed focus on sovereignty and security as global interest in the Arctic grows.

Officials confirmed that the Northwest Territories will chair the Northern Premiers’ Forum for the coming year, demonstrating an ongoing commitment to shared action and regional leadership.
