A routine traffic stop turned into a significant drug‐seizure operation on Wednesday afternoon, when the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) pulled over a vehicle around 4:15 p.m. and uncovered drug paraphernalia in plain view.
A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed approximately 53.44 grams of suspected crack cocaine and $565 in cash, according to a press release. The two occupants of the vehicle — identified as Jermaine Gargan (42) and Harley Betsedea (27), both of Fort Simpson — have been charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking and possession of property obtained by crime. Gargan faces an additional charge of operating a vehicle while suspended; Betsedea is charged with failing to comply with a condition of a release order. C
Following their release from custody, both are scheduled to appear in court in Fort Providence on January 20, 2026.
Northern Perspective:
In remote NWT communities, where supply, transport, and law‑enforcement dynamics differ markedly from urban centres, a seizure of this scale signals both the reach of illicit substances into northern regions and the challenges faced by local policing. The incident underscores the continuing need for community‑based prevention, support services, and surveillance amid sparsely populated corridors where travel between towns is long and enforcement resources are stretched.
